Shutdown Fallout
Let’s talk realistically for a minute. Once flights resume, snap is returned, people go back to work, and everything settles down, what do you think the public—just regular people who don’t follow politics seriously—will recall about the shutdown?
They will recall that it is about healthcare and that the democrats “lost.” Now, what will this same public think when premiums skyrocket? They will think: republicans did this.
I’m not trying to be overly partisan here, I’m just pointing out what will realistically happen. What is the conservative plan? What is the proposal to replace the ACA outside of Trump’s vague idea about sending everyone money in the mail?
This will all be in conjunction, more than likely, with grocery prices that haven’t declined and, if current inflation holds, have only increased. Tariffs will obviously not have yet brought back factories and will not have “kicked in” in any meaningful way for the consumer, who will still be paying tariff prices for at least some goods.
It all just seems like a crazy cocktail of frustration for the American public, and I don’t see how republicans avoid being the source of that frustration.
For the sake of this discussion, let’s assume that we will have a free and fair midterm. What do you see happening long term?
