I've seen a lot of talk about the family being represented by teacups and whether or not you're considered part of it depends on what cup you get when you visit. There's even a track in the anime ost called teacups that plays mostly over family scenes. Axeman is into storytelling via obscure details enough that I could see this being intentional.
