I want a silent hill that is horrifying, not a snorefest.
SH2 was terrifying.
SH3 was terrifying.. but has issues with plot and dialogue (the monsters in it were the best in the series for me in juxtaposition with ).
SH1 looks like an old PS1 game and i not terrifying.
You just need to get the balance right. Cook and see what happens, then tweak to make it feel like SH1/3 but better for the modern audience. Right now it's really starting to show it's age.
For starters, it is not pure psych horror. A lot of the horror comes merely from the monsters and the PS1 doesn't really cut it for that now. A new player will just laugh at how it looks. That's not the case with SH2 or SH3 because games really haven't done it as well since. I think only Dead Space comes close and even that doesn't do things right. It's like Scorn which thinks just having flesh everywhere and body horror is enough. It's about shit in the subconscious. Often sex is the go to theme of SH and this really is hard to capture in an age where people are timid of the most placid of sexual themes. But it goes further than that and applies a religious tone to things. Like you are in God's rape dungeon. Not just a rape dungeon. A purgatory where you face your demons including your sexual traumas.
That's why SH2 and SH3 have still not been beaten in many ways. A lot of games just refuse to touch that subject matter. It disturbs people.
Hell, they tried to ban Silent Hill F in Australia recently because it "disturbed people". It's a horror game, of course it does. What did these people expect? The secret cow level or something? (no ones going to get this Diablo joke)
