Because where the camera is looking isn't random, it's been carefully designed to convey information, obscure enemies, induce a particular feeling in the player etc. By fixing the camera you're severely diminishing the experience that the game was designed around.

OTS games are made for consoles and controllers.
The couch distance is perfect but it looks a bit shit on the desktop and the short distance from the monitor. That's why PC power gamers like us push the FOV to the limit and OTS horror games feel a bit restricted in an annoying way.

The cinematic camera allowed devs to control what to show the viewer, while giving them artistic freedom to design captivating set pieces and shots. It can also hide bad looking graphics, which is common in movies. The idea is give you an idea, but not linger on it too long otherwise the human mind will pick apart the defects.

But you don't actually care. You just want to bait retards like me.

Because if you play through with this mod there are sections where the camera is clearly pointing to an item or POI that otherwise does not stand out whatsoever and you'd have a hard time finding it unless you've played through before. This then makes you scour every single room more thouroughly, which might sound nice in principle, but honestly is just tedious.

You can very easily miss important key lore-relevant sections like the iconic Vatiel while climbing the ladder scene if you happen to not be looking the right way.

That being said the mod is great because you can freely toggle between the two camera positions.

t. played through with it and a ton of other fixes last halloween, its great once you beat the game at least once.

The heather dress up angle is neat, and I can see they were trying to push a dress up doll waifu angle with ehr. And teens are much more fashionable than adults. A lot of teh mechanics to unlock outfits is pretty obtuse too.

Oh and it lacked a "director's cut", which you just know was gonna add a bunch of new content to the game. Why no xbox version?! I gurantee you they'd add like 5 more outfits if it got a special edition.

Fixed camera angles are artistic expression, especially when it comes to horror games. The designers can tailor how the game is presented and what information to shown and highlighted for the optimal experience. Behind the shoulder camera with precise gun aiming makes a horror game inherently less scary because you're more in control and just turns into a horror-themed shooter

>SH = fixed

This is one of the weirdest myths ever, and I think people are conflating Sh with RE. SH was trying to innovate and move away from RE's fixed camera and 2D backgrounds.

it's mostly behind the character, and often for rooms it has a custom viewpoint where it swings around to focus on the character. They will periodically use a fixed camera for dramatic moments or to highlight something.

Horror as a genre is built heavily on restricting your vision. Since it's scarier when you can't see because then you get paranoid.

Because of this the two best perspectives for horror is either first person (so you can't directly see around corners) or fixed camera (so the game can force some really claustrophobic views on you).

It requires a more complicated setup where you make 80% of the model other than the arms and hands invisible, and this is ultimately just a fan project by some brazillian. If you have a method to do this, feel free to do so.

I checked and i don't think it's open source at all, despite having a github.

Don't be disingenuous, they aren't fixed angles like in re, but the camera doesn't have nearly the same freedom of movement as in OTS and the game feel it gives is completely different, losing the moments where the camera is fixed on a point and swivels around with your character completely changes how the game looks and feels to play.

The reason for the death of cinematic camera angles is not even the audience, it's the laziness and lower artistic quality of modern game devs, they are automatizing lighting, do you think they want to waste time carefully planning camera angles?
Just outsource the camera work to the player.

FF7 also ALREADY SOLVED THIS with optional highlights of exits and where your character is. They should have these highlights as OPTIONS that you can disable. I don't mind options for retards, and I would love to see more SH style difficulty modes that split things up for retards. In addition to action and riddle, they should probably have "maze" difficulty.

People can't navigate for shit, which is fine. Hide the actually complex game in "advanced" or "hard", and let retards bum around normal mode

SH was definitely moving toward what RE4 did, but it would also be free to change the camera at times if it wanted to. You could definitely do something like over the shoulder mode in combat heavier sections. That's totally fine. Those areas tend to suck because of the tank controls.
But some areas should have more creative direction instead of just over the shoulder everywhere. That's doesn't quite work for RE4, let alone silent hill. I don't know why dead space and other games just had 1 point of view the entire game unless the character was dying or some other unique animation there was a cutscene.

SH3 especially needs a dramatic change with how it does camera work. It is incredibly frustrating to play and the camera just makes you bump into collision you cannot see, especially with things like Pendulums. Always bumping into those things because you can't tell where they begin and end.

Btw, these things are the most terrifying creature in any video game for me.
>dat screech sound is so fucking horrifying for me when it starts spinning, feels almost insectoid, like a bee with a knive flaying mindlessly
But after you've dealt with some, you begin to realise they're so jank with that tank camera and that kinda ruins them for me.

I don't know why they went tank for this other than limited resources.

They end up doing half assed over the shoulder shit by the tunnels anyway, so it was kinda pointless to have any tank-ness for some things.
But in the empty shop stalls it could definitely do something more artistically creative with the camera. They should just go back and forth. Sometimes it's better to mix it up.

It does weird creative pans and stuff too. It's not just over the shoulder or fixed all the time. SH switches it up regularly... but unfortunately it keeps using that terrible fucking camera in places like the tunnels and has awful cameras for the boss fights. Alyssa and God are the worst bosses in any video game I've played because of their camera. It's so bad and the combat just looks so fucking jank there.
The slug monster might be the only one which might get away with it, but even that one sucks.

But if they change the camera at all for this part, I might get mad. These scenes are perfect.

I agree that they really don't try with this shit much anymore.

This part here is perfectly shot ay.
The parts outside are... not, in any way, for the gameplay they are making you do.

I will say this:
>PT was surprisingly lazy with it's camera work at times.
Not even Death Stranding is like that. In fact it gets rather tricky with cameras a bit like MGS at times. Not sure what Kojima was cooking with PT because that could have gone further with his style of camerawork and framing.

I don't see why they couldn't use this game to master their camerawork and not just do RE4. RE4 is too easy and dumb. You need to change things where it is necessary for artistic reasons.

In SH3, the collision is so bad on some models it ruins the horror for me. Enemies end up feeling like walls and that's not a good thing. They should hurt more often I think. Not all times, but definitely more often. You shouldn't be able to walk this easily into them in SH3.
In SH2 you get away with it, it's a different type of horror. The enemies have to feel rather helpless and useless. The gameplay is more intentionally nerfed really.
SH3 is not that. It doesn't feel as punchy as it should and the hit boxes and shit are all fucked up. The enemies are kinda easy to deal with, which is a shame really. They should be super hard to deal with, but not because of jank controls and boxes. It should be done to get across the idea of feeling threatened and weak and up against the world of Silent Hill itself.

I'd go further, you know the bleeding and pulsing walls? Those should hurt and attack more. The solid objects of SH3 should be like walking on glass and rusted wire in acid.

You shouldn't be able to just stare at the bloody walls, you should be slowed down and harmed by a visceral looking thing like this. Like it's eating you, lusting for you.

It should have this, but it should be pathetic but fair (expected given how it looks and what you're dealing with). It should be like you're struggling to resist the enemy and push it away out of fear of harming it. Honestly, James should be punished for physically attacking or resisting.

In SH3, it should just be hard but rewarded. Not silly though. Don't make Heather a superman. She's very weak, she's just overcoming her weakness.

Actually that's a core to Silent Hill.
You're constantly finding weird coincidences at just the right moment. It will make you struggle between these moments, but when you are there they tend to be obvious and in plain site to almost mock you and make you feel like you're being tricked.

It's mostly judging distance from the enemy, and wrangling the camera is actually a skill the player has to pick up (it's not intuitive). You try to get the camera behind James to make it easier to judge hits. The early town segments for new players is a really unfun experience if you don't know what you're doing.

i think behind the character woudl be my preference, with the character centered, but OTS also gets the job done. It's easier to judge distance.

I actually dislike the new combat in the remake, as it follows trends, while making fighting more of a chore. The camera shake on hits is a cheap trick to make the combat feel more visceral, and I especially dislike the mangetic melee attacks.

james also holds his weapons like a professional, whereas in the original he holds them like an untrained idiot. This has gameplay impact, as he doesn't handle recoil well and takes longer to ready his aim again. He especially holds the shotgun like a doofus.

Iโ€™m convinced that not being able to wrap your head around fixed cameras and tank controls is some kind of brain deficiency, like people who have no internal monologue.

The problem is that instead of just saying โ€œThis isnโ€™t for me,โ€ and moving on with their lives, these people demand that everything be accessible for them at all times. Hence, everything is now dumbed down to retard level and homogenized.

People who bitch about fixed-camera and tank controls need to be placed in the same category as people who bitch about turn-based combat and demand that Soulslikes have an easy mode.

it's refined and better understood in SH3, because you hold ready and then block. In Sh2 you have to hit x to block when out of combat which is very unintuitive.

that's more of a AAA games budget and dev cycle problem. if devs didn't dedicate one gorillion dollars and half a decade to release singular projects at a time they could make more risky or niche products, but when your job security is riding on the one game you'll be releasing in a generation doing well, design will morph to accommodate as many people as possible because you can't really afford to alienate anyone.

You literally couldn't see if you were aiming in the right direction because of the tank controls at times. You'd have to guess what the hit box is in that particular view and then guess what the game wants from you. Even then, it just feels so inconsistent that it just kinda sucks and you just think "this should be better" which players have had from day 1 with these games. That's not something the player should think about at all ay unless you absolutely need the camera for an artistic reason that is absolutely necessary. You might get away with it a couple times at the start, but after that you should avoid that for the same enemies.

Tank controls have nothing to do with seeing, and you can infer you are locked on by James's stance, and if not, you back up and adjust the camera so you can see the enemy clearly. There's no guessing at all. It's not inconsistent in the slightest.

It wasn't explained well, and the controls are awkward, as you have to lower your guard and then try to block. It was better promoted and explained in SH3.

I think in all my playthroughs I accidentally blocked like once and was like "wtf was that?" and kept playing. With 2D controls especially you can dance around enemies and not get hit.

Funniest thing is that my resource saving autism made the game harder on early playthroughs. I basically rarely used the guns, and saved all my shotgun rounds.

A recent playthrough I was using the shotgun a lot more liberally, especially on regular enemies and nurses. It just destroys most enemies in 1-2 hits, and nurses become a non-issue now.

Often I'd just get damaged when I would expect to block something. You can't even tell where the hitbox is going to hit you half the time and you can just walk into the enemies.

If I ran into their collision anymore before getting hurt I'd probably fuse with them into a new creature. kek

Think about it, a magnetized whore means the game is putting you in a fighting situation, there's no way you can slip past them like in the old game, they are an obstacle that you HAVE to defeat to progress. It's why everyone that played the remake is annoyed at the ambushing mannequins because the game is not about spoopy nurses anymore, it's a gauntlet.

Horror is a function of atmosphere, not gameplay design. You could make a boomer shooter that's scary as shit. It's all about the presentation. RE4 still has some shades of spookiness, especially the village at night, the regenerators and that one area on the island with the thing in the sack flailing around. Take out the kung fu and RE4 really isn't that more combat focused than the earlier games.

That's not what's going on, you see the same thing with dice roll mechanics; it's was determined that the attack will hit and the laziest way to make it work when you dodge out of the way is to slide the characters into position for the choreography. If they didn't bake in the syncing of the attack and hit animations then they would have to make james respond dynamically with a partial ragdoll which takes some talent that the devs don't have.

Why would you have the enemy skate into place so the attack still connects instead of letting them whiff the air if the player has physically gotten out of the way? Isn't that the entire point behind the concept of a dodge, getting the fuck out of the way of an attack?

So if I understand this right: the enemy is glitching out and not in an "attack" mode, thus when James tries to attack it everything wiffs because the weapons are not "really" doing damage, it's just for show. when you get into combat, the visuals are for show, and your weapon itself doesn't do anything, it's instead this dance of inputs? That's why everything has to be magnetic then?

This is why it FEELS like a turn based combat when you enter into melee, because it kinda is?

Because it would require hit detection with the position of the weapon and you open up the possibility for the attack to connect anywhere along the arc that the weapon is swinging and then the designer has to handle james reaction to that. For example james could be facing away from the nurse and get clocked on the back of the head which requires a whole new set of animations. A good developer would find a way to make james dynamic.

The talentless fucks at bloober team most likely started prototyping the combat with grey boxes instead of animated models which means working off of distance and timing based rules instead of real hit detection and then just built on top of that because they didn't give a fuck and were just churning out a product.

The wildest shit is that there is nothing stopping them from just using the real SH2 as a base, which already has this, then just adding in new models and environments. It would seem better to build on something rather than to make a hasty shanty town in 6 months that looks nice from a distance.

Apparently gamers don't care? That's the sad part.

Does this mean that the melee combat of Silent Hill 1 in 1999 is technically more impressive because it has actual hit detection?

Not saying it's hard to do, you can actually download a blueprint off the asset store which does partial ragdolls, but then it would get more complicated to do the canned takedown animations. You would need two systems, one canned and one dynamic and determine rules for when to switch between the two while blending animations seamlessly.

Like I said, it requires the developer to give a fuck. SH2 demake was the opposite of giving a fuck, I'm pretty sure the whole prison section was a generic asset they bought because none of it fits in with the rest of silent hill.

I think they tried best they can, based on their budget, talent, and time given. They at least tried to mindlessly copy other games like Last of Us and Calisto Protocol.

That being said, it feels like such a generic Unrela engine "hire this man" fan project at times, like someone modded another game with SH characters.

Everyone is ugly and they have weird proportions because no one knows anatomy anymore. They literally had to reduce head sizes of many characters.

It's unoptimized Unreal engine jank with a lot of asset store assets. I feel a bit liek Frank Grimes pointing this out. Does no one care? It seemed to check the checklist of "fun game" for most people, and they enjoyed it and forgot about it.

I'm genuinely NOT impressed by modern AA or AAA jank. It looks like jank, hastily sloppily put together and downright ugly at times.

Look at the shadow over her eyes in the original, the way the lighting dims and the image gets slightly blurry. It's conveying the sense of horror James is feeling as she starts to say things only Mary would know, the realization that she isn't a normal person, but something else. It's extremely unnerving and creepy. In the remake she is doing a bad job at trying to be seductive, which doesn't fit the scene at all.

It's not having this shot used.
It's when it's NOTHING but this shot that is the problem.

It's why I dislike RE4. It doesn't work primarily because it never ever changes it's camerawork.
Another guilty game is Amnesia/Penumbra. They never ever change the camerawork and it kinda limits artistic expression with some scenes. You don't need the consistent camera in every scene.

The fact that we have to point this out now is kinda strange when you think about it. It's just completely different to film media where they're dynamically changing the camera to get an effect. I can obviously see why that isn't the case given the complexity of making a dynamic camera that doesn't hinder the gameplay to the point where it's unplayable. But, you'd think you'd change it up a bit at least when transitioned to a different room with a different feel. In silent hill, it could be extremely beneficial to experiment with the camera like that. Make the camera work around the room a bit but also trying to avoid making the aiming and combat really jank. The issue is probably collision when that becomes a problem the most. Collision tends to act kinda strange when your camera is panning or moving and your renderer or engine is trying to bring objects closer to or further from the camera.

SM64 is very good example of the game doing very strange things just because the camera is moving.
You'd think modern engines would have solved this problem and while they are more consistent, I'm constantly still seeing the same bugs in all 3D games. This is problem with things like floating point precision.

The model looks fine.
The lighting is... all wrong.

The shadows on her eyes and face are just all wrong and it makes her expression here look completely off.
She's looks strangely more like Heather Mason here too. What's up with that? I think it's just the detail in the skin, it's more like Heather's because Heather's skin was in a game that came much later than this and was more advanced.

But the lighting is just flat out wrong and that stands out the most. Her eyes aren't as squinty and it doesn't feel as sinister and sensual.
She also does these subtle cheeky half smiles that feel more sinister and flirty.

Yes, that is 100% the original game as it shipped before patches. One of the first things patched was to reduce Maria's gigantic noggin. No one noticed or cared during the entire development cycle.

well, she's ugly with a giant jaw and looks 45 at least for one. A horror game about being chased by an over the hill stripper is one thing, but that's not what the original was going for. Also baffling she has a strong mannish strong jaw when Maria is a clear Cameron Diaz copy.

An original render of Lisa shows she was originally an almost 1:1 copy of Cameron Diaz until she was altered.

It looks like a Dark Souls fight, and you half expect "Pyramid Head, eater of souls" with a life bar to pop up. The stage is also nice and wide since gamers hate tight spaces. it's all very video gamey, while the original had James react much more realistically, and the prospect as a player of being trapped with this freak show in a tight space is unnerving.

It's not the same type of horror like you do with horror games today.
It's a slow punishing slog through hell screaming the entire way sort of thing.
Though I still feel like System Shock nibbled something too and it's not even that visually horrific, SHODAN is just such a horrifying thing and what happen to the crew is just horrific. The Matrix is another one that is horrific for me.
>that one scene in the animatrix where the power plants are just beginning and the machines are keeping people alive, awake and are experimenting on their bodies alive
Btw we do this with animals IRL and it's fucking appalling. Fucking pharma.
Not even rats, we use monkeys and dogs and shit.

My sister works in that and it's horrific. It's actually caused tension between us.
But she also used to pin live insects so that kinda was to be expected.
