Anything unique got erased in the UE5 asset flip. I think people like the remake because it plays it so safe and plays like every other game. It's a box, they pick it up, it looks like a game, they beat it and move on. But it totally lacks any meaningful identity.
The remake is actually a bit more conventionally "gamey". You can imagine a Dark Souls style health-bar and name "Red Triangle Thing" pop up when you face off against PH the first time. Bosses Roar as well like "bosses". PH looks "cool". You fight him in a nice big giant "boss arena" (that doesn't look like it should fit within the apartments at all). The aestetics are from the movies, etc.
The original could be said to be a misfire since it was cinematic and artistic with a lot of focus on aestetics and atsmophere. It likely bored a lot of initial gamers in 2001.
