It's a mid game, honestly.

I play the OG SH2 every year, this year I'm playing with the over the shoulder camera mod to just change things a little bit.
But SH2R misses the mark. The cutscenes are inferior. They keep focusing on the FACE.
They have a FACE MOCAP TECH so they NEED TO SHOW IT, which detracts from every single cutscene.

My issue with the remake:
-plays like every single other over the shoulder UE5 game ever made
-padded to hell and back
-is that a brand new room that wasn't in the original game? I wonder what is th- ammo and mannequin, repeat 10x
-the aesthetic is taken straight from the movies, not from the original game
-sanitized textures, they have no grunge grime whatsoever
-boss fight changes (every boss except for eddie roars now)
-seriously, the roaring is a real fucking problem, am I playing a generic fucking MMO? why is every boss roaring with particles falling from the ceiling?
-Maria's VA sounds bored (good as Mary, though, except for the letter reading)
-Maria is not sexy
-Maria is not flirt
-Maria is not Maria
-Absolutely garbage butchered letter reading and they removed important parts of the letter
-Angela's VA can't act
-Extra Angela scene to further show that Angela's VA can't act
-Laura sounds like the idea of a child written by a gen x/late millennial that has never interacted with a child before

Flawed pacing and some odd choices, but it's at least unique, interesting, really pushing games. it's really this giant adventure, like going on a grail quest or something even though it's a modern setting. I really like stories that take mundane urban landscapes and turn them into fun adventure worlds. Parasite Eve did this with New York and turning into a j-RPG fantays land.

That's probably the most fair review the game can get. It's not... awful? Like abhorrant but has that subpar genericness and ugliness to it. Very paint by numbers. You can tell if left to their own Blobber would never make Sh2 in 2001 on the PS2 or a game on its level. it's like an inferior copy.

i could give a million reasons why it's worse but i will just state one, namely even in the opening cutscene both mary and james' VA is clearly sad in the remake whereas the point of the original VA direction is that it's ambiguous what either of them are feeling until near the end of the game. james especially is meant to be so emotionally numb that he has no idea what his real emotions are and he's only going to silent hill because of his subconscious desire to face the truth

I liked it a lot. OG SH2 is one of my favorite games and I played it right before so it would be fresh in my mind. That said, the remake is no replacement for the original and almost every cutscene is worse. But it is fun to see a reimagining of the town and see all the ways it plays on your expectations and knowledge of the original, as someone who already knows the original. I view it as sort of a modernized master quest version of SH2.

If you like James, Angela and Laura, it does right by them. Personally feel like Maria, Mary and Eddie are a little under developed in regards to their classic counterparts. Its a little unfortunate because Maria is close but suffers in regards to her performance.

James: murder-suicide
Eddie: gunned down by the cops
Laura: raped to death by her foster dad

Everyone is in limbo trying to get out. This explains the loop theory with all the dead bodies.

Everyone experiences their own personal Hell.
James: rust and dilapidated because Mary dying of cancer
Eddie: freezing cold because he stuffed a body in a fridge or something
Laura: ???
Angela: hotel fire

Leave is the only ending where James moves on. Laura is his guardian angel. Him killing Mary isn't a sin because she was going to die in a few days anyway so it was a mercy killing, so he's going to heavan. All the other endings are where James hasn't forgiven himself and the cycle repeats. Eddie will keep dying because he's a fucktard and Angela is too far gone since she killed her dad and all the people in the fire.

The remake made combat more engaging, but there needs to be a nerf to dodging. I ended up spamming dodge just to get past enemies instead of fighting. There was no need to stock up on items. There's no flavor text for examining objects.

A story can make allusions to something without it being true. They most certainly want the player to notice the similarities to their situation and limbo (both Christian and buddhist), but it's not so. The town has a demonic energy to it and it's lured and trapped thse people there.

Sure it's the result of limitations but the cutscenes in SH1 really help the game's atmosphere. The delay between lines, the music, the way it's really just 2 people talking together. It's very eerie and I'd take that over the Hollywood shit modern games are doing.

The combat in the original was shit but it communicated a certain feel, it was very secondary, your were pummelling sad and pathetic looking monsters with a pipe. The remake is non stop bombastic action where you get constantly ambushed by very aggressive monsters doing dodges and counters and shit.

You find several notes from people who are themselves experiencing the same shit James is and they're a dead corpse. The town wants these people DEAD and you, the player, are just having survivor's bias by playing as a guy who might survive. 3 of the 4 side characters die (everyone but Laura). And even James dies in one of the 4 main endings anyways.

It's not a therapy town, it's a demon town. Mad people like in the psych ward also seem to tap into this. People on crazy drugs as well.

It's unknown why this place is like it is. maybe it was pure and wholesome when the natives were in charge, but the spiritual energy was corrupted by settlers? Who knows. The original dev team was disbanded so we'll never know.

it's a remake that is decent enough to revive the series, but gameplay wise it doesn't really do anything unique other than fell like a lack luster Resident Evil. the story itself is not much different from new horror games like Alan Wake or Evil Within.

Yeah they cover the events of the games, but not the deep backstory of why the town is like this to begin with. I can see the Japanese making a story corny enough that the area is a natural well spring of spiritual energy, and the natives were in harmony with it, but the white man came and corrupted it.

As someone who's never played the original but played the remake I highly enjoyed it for what is was but do not have the perspective to compare it to its original.
My thoughts in summary,
Pros:
Attention to detail is phenomenal, a lot of little things that go unnoticed, like James wedding ring he used to wear has a light tan on his finger, or how he literally ages as you progress through the game.
Some of the best atmosphere I've seen in a horror game, second only to Resident Evil 7.
Things like his breathing, or those random almost silent screams from a women's voice throughout the game, or the radio tricking you into thinking there's no enemies because some monsters don't set the radio off, all work in tandem of audio stressors. It's weird because I usually HATE the sounds of forced breathlessness from actors but it worked here.
The abominations were great to fight, the mannequins are absolute niggers to deal with which made it fun.
The connections with Maria and Luara and how they viewed James, like how the Luara draws James as the wolf or Maria having this weird fixation on the girl despite not knowing her, and the slight hints of James having moments of outbursts, despite seeming so meek through most of the game, all have a payoff when you learn what he did.
The ending reveal with James' and his wife's tragedy was genuinely heart wrenching.

Cons:
Stuttery as fuck, with white artifacts and graphical smears that can't be removed in the settings.
The voice acting for Maria and the Mama's girl was fucking horrendous. I got used to Maria but I just couldn't stand the other girl whenever she was on screen.
Everything relating to Eddy was weird. I don't understand the point of this character. Mixed feelings because he was still kind of interesting.
Maria, despite being someone who looks like a prostitute, is genuinely ugly to look at, and I cringed whenever she tried to flirt with James.
One of the longest horror games I've played, while in of itself isn't a bad thing, I felt some of the "indoor" levels dragged on a bit too long, especially in that fucking labyrinth below the prison. We really didn't need to backtrack three fucking times for this one area.
Game can get very esoteric at times, which is annoying when you want actual answers on what's actually going on.
Too little enemy variety, albeit the enemies are great to fight or run away from, it's shocking to see only 3 different enemies for most of the game.

Just came out of otherworld silent hill, survived pyramid head trying to chop me in half, then James meets a mirror image of his wife and has zero fucking reaction about it, zero thoughts on why he just accidentally slipped into the pits of hell, and then porn music starts playing and we're flirting??!! WTF is this tone? I got mental whiplash all the while James is non reactionary to any of it. Why the fuck is Eddie so fucking wet?! Every single bit of dialogue has been what the absolute fuck so far.

It also bothered me how much criticism was swept aside/the remake was praised for having superior combat when it's so braindead.
It's unforgivable that even on hard mode the nurses are programmed to interrupt every 3rd swing from James, make an attack you can easily dodge with i-frames regardless of whether you're in an open hallway or packed into a tight corner, and then go right back to taking the same 3 hits again. It's insanely lazy.
