I’m playing this right now. I’m in the prison so I think I’m almost done. Pretty great overall. James is such a sad sack unlikeable guy though, wow. Is he an alcoholic? I bet he never even loved his wife or pushed her away, he’s so pathetic for most of the game, the end is going to shit on him, I know it. He’s got insane incel rage with his melee attacks, he’s really into headstomping these women monsters, you can tell from his voice he’s repressing something.
I love the first quarter of the game in the misty town. Fuck that feels nice. I wish the whole game was exploring those misty streets with small side excursions into medium sized buildings (as opposed to the hospital).
The game is way longer than I expected too! I’m slow walking the whole thing and its longer than re4r. Love it.
Overall I’m really impressed. Not quite as polished as an re game but still really good.

Taken in a vacuum, it's a serviceable game. It's not as tight as the original, and the fighting is drawn out by Last of Us/Uncharted style combat, where enemies have states where they can't be stunned, requiring you to dodge. There's also just way more of it. The game ends up stretching what was about 5 hours of gameplay into 20+ hours, leading to it outstaying its welcome. Jame's new actor was also very good

I'd give it a 7, it's good, but just play the original.

There's every indication they're going to remake RE5. They already skipped Code Veronica, they probably shouldn't have, but the reaction to that game was never as positive as the others. REmake 3 was supposed to be DLC, but then they released it as a standalone thing, which is why it had such a quick turnaround (also because they only "remade" half the original game). What happens when they get to RE6? Will they skip that one, too? People hate that one way more than Code Veronica and unlike CV, RE6 has almost been retconned away by the newer games. Do they remake any of the spin-offs? By 2030 are we looking at an RE7 remake?
These are all valid questions and none of them bode well for the success of the franchise, compared to when the question would've simply been "Are they going to port Nemesis to the N64 or not, and when is the next game coming out?"

The first was because RE4's development was completely fucked and they made multiple other games out of its dev cycle, and the second was because after RE6 Capcom underwent a massive restructuring of their entire company. the dialog more explicitly explains the story and character motives to the player rather than leaving it vague which for the most part is fine except for in one instance.
I don't remember in the original the game explicitly stating that james killed mary. there was flashes of some super vague imagery which could be interpreted as his darkest most morbid desires but in the remake not only does he flat out say it out loud but he says it directly to laura. he tells laura "I killed mary", she then screams at him, hits him and runs away. This makes the default ending that most players will get "leave" kinda odd as in the ending we see james and laura leaving together, Laura happily skipping along next to james as he's going to take care of her now or something.

nah it's pretty great, and in most regards better than the original but i still don't believe it needed to be made but made with love it was, they were fans of the original, some of the new direction works, and some doesn't but all around not souless like those re remakes or that snake eater remake on the horizon
