>I can see why you would be disappointed if you were a fan of SH1 and played it in the 2000s before it turned into this cult classic everyone loves
That was me, but me and everyone LOVED it day 1.
I don't know if it was just me and my pals, stepping into our teenage years and puberty just as the game came out, or if it's just the superior European schooling teaching kids patience and interest towards literature and art... but just about everything in SH2 just "clicked" with us.
I don't see how SH2 would be "confusing", especially compared to the SH1.
The sequel literally spoonfeeds you the most important details on your very 1st playthrough, no matter what you do; there's no "mystery" to solve during the later playthroughs, just some minor details to dust up and place in their corresponding slots on the shelf.
Yeah, gameplay-wise it was still "just another RE clone", but that was never a negative to the series and genre's fans. Everything else, however, was revolutionary and influential - but most of that jazz was aesthetics stuff that tends to fly over normies' heads.
And if you were already browsing the pre-Youtube, pre-social media interwebs on your dusty modem back in the day, chances are that you lurked and posted on one of the two massive SH Forums, dissecting every small detail with your fellow fanboys and girls.
