oh god so you know what i've realised (stupidest shit)
it's that, as in your image, you have to scroll to the right right to display the little widget that lets you set the anchor point.

and, by default, it USED to work like in the first 5 seconds of this video:

yeah i know align/distribute tools in everything let you select different anchor points/sides/whatever, as they should, but fucking hell.
so now my 'workaround' is clicking 'top' then aligning to top, clicking 'bottom' when aligning to bottom... instead of just how it used to work, how it works in old GIMP, Word, everything-else-ever?!
