It's been there since the 1940s before the word was subverted. The MCM building facade facing the strand is exquisite and still looks the same 70 years later.
You used to be able to climb to the top of the tower which served as an overlook of the highway on one side and the ocean/beach on the other. It also used to have an amusement pier next to it and two blocks down was the legendary Pavilion amusement park. I was lucky enough to experience Myrtle at the end of it's golden era before the pavilion closed, and today most of the downtown/boardwalk area is unrecognizable compared to then, except for the Gay Dolphin Gift Cove thankfully.
The lack of appreciation this kind of stuff gets nowadays is sad to say the least. It's no wonder its all been disappearing throughout the US in the past 20 year when even a basket weaving travel board doesnt care, let alone the GP..
