>they had to literally rent out troops from North Korea last year to retake Kursk
It was Kim's idea according to U.S. intelligence, and he only got IOU in exchange.
It is believed that apart from improving ties with Russia his objective was to provide his troops with experience in real warfare.

>the only person who was both able and willing to take a stand against him was Prigozhin
Prigozhin was definitely charismatic enough to mislead many observers into believing that he was a true patriot, while the only thing he was truly defending was his own little empire. Constantly praising the enemy, sucking up to NATO prowess, treasonously sperging out during ukrainian counteroffensive of all times after he was forced to sign up a contract with russian MoD, even lying about ukrainian gains — in essence he was a warlord for hire and always put his personal status above patriotism, which made him about as corrupt as the generals he was trying to remove. Wouldn't be surprising if he was secretly offered a token of appreciation from western powers to potentially create a major mutiny in Russia, but thankfully it didn't catch up.
