90% of indies fail because their character design fucking sucks. If you can't design an attractive or appealing character, you will lose.

All of these indies won because they had good character design on top of being well received games. If you make something generic or ugly, it will not sell. Just look at how well Nintendo's characters have survived given how much appeal they have. Games like

>Yooka Laylee
> Any indie with Generic anime art or Western cartoon art game
Have no appeal and even come off as ugly.
