In my case I saw Rex as a foil to Amalthus in a different way. I mentioned it in another thread but Rex kind of treats Pyra like his gun early on in XC2. It's not intentional, Rex is just immature. So when Vandham tells him to stop fighting and run away, Rex refuses and charges in anyway. Even as Pyra is yelping in pain because she can't keep up with what Rex is doing. Again not because Rex is a bad person, it's just that he's kind of a dumbass kid. It isn't until Jin calls him out that Rex realizes how he's kind of been using Pyra for his own ends with no regard for how it affects her. And he grows. He's now more willing to carry her burdens and work in a symbiotic relationship with her.

Amalthus never had that growth. When Malos went rogue and started blowing up continents, Amalthus never bothered to look inward and change. No, instead he started using other people. Then he used the knowledge from Judicium to clear away the learned experiences from Core Crystals so that he exclusively could have control over them. And if someone ever called him out on his horseshit, he can deflect by claiming he has a higher sad backstory credit score and therefore no one can correct him on the shit he does. Amalthus is a terrible person but we do see people who think this way. Where a terrible thing happened to them and they use that as justification to do bad things to other people rather than move on. They're grown babies which is why I can appreciate how Rex, despite being a literal child, can clown on Amalthus and show himself as more mature than him
