Well, it depends on your sex, but you certainly had to get luckier and work harder to live a comfortable life. But I think people conflate social and technological change too much, it’s possible to have a culture that promotes the values these eras did and have computers and shit at the same time. I think a lot of progressive type people (read: FAGS) like to pretend their ideology is inherently tied to central heating and indoor plumbing, when really it was the work of people from history who were built stronger that made everything today possible. There is a lot to be said for more stringent social rules and a greater sense of personal duty, and that’s another reason these shows have such a romantic quality to them, everyone’s lives were wrapped up in these big noble ideas that are just shat on and called stupid in todays boring fucking world
