The thing I find notable is is if you look at Racing transformed's title, those chose to feature Sonic 5 times on the cover, and then Eggman and AiAi.

No other characters, they were ashamed of the other Sonic characters.

Fastforward to today, and the cover for Crossworlds proudly shows way more Sonic characters, including characters people wouldnt know like Jet. the short even features Sonic losing.
