Gambit deserves better writers. Whenever they do give him over to a guy that knows him, he becomes one of my favorite dudes in comics. But when it's a woman writing him, barring a run I'm unaware of that was wrote by a woman, they don't seem to understand that he really wears a mask, that the suave charm is something he can turn on, and the real him is a lot more protective, nuanced and mature. The chuunibyou style of his powers and his actions, his "If you do somethin', best do it with style" approach is just a bit of a symptom of being a man that got denied a childhood, rather than the whole character he is.
I dunno, it's frustrating since I'm super glad he got a popularity resurgence in recent years which means he has a good chance of showing up in more things now, and in 97 he was probably the highlight of the entire show, with how he was able to respectively break up with Rogue during her spaz out alongside going out like a champ, but I just hope they don't flanderize him to the point of erasing the troubled and more noble core of his character. The suave Cajun thief complements him and helps with his work, it's not his whole personality, and I wish women writers would "get" that more.
