Another anon taught me to be critical when watching any animation, from anywhere. Basically an average 2D japanese cartoon struggles to have character animation outside of action scenes. Just talking, emoting with your arms, showing your personality through the way you act and do small things THAT'S NOT FIGHT SCENES. Here's an example of something recent (2023) from the frogs, with exceptional good character animation despite the average TV budget.
And yet, despite the sheer volume of trash there are still more well written shows made in Glorious Nippon per year, then in N America and Europe.
