And how old were the houses you've been in?
IF they were made after the 70s, rooms were designed to be bigger, thus allowing people to sit further away from their TV.
My entire post was just to explain the different archetcture over the decades and why people before your time would sit closer.
I still think people who were born earlier would sit closer, because arcades taught us we're supposed to be 2-3 feet away from the screen though.
ALSO, big TVs used to be rare. Big TVs didn't become common until the 90s and even then, anything over 26 or 28" was pretty damn expensive. So people were used to sitting close to their small TVs and didn't change their habit when bigger TVs started becoming more available.

that's not me (and i appreciate him reading my blog) and the only meds i've taken were for an overactive thyroid, which I no longer need to take. Shit was a bitch, because i gained nearly 80lbs within 4 months of taking them. Miraculously, i went from 170 to 240 without any stretch marks.
