AM2R was very unfortunate timing as Nintendo has Metroid 2 remake on works for 3DS the same year.
Nothing else comes to mind except some Smash tournament meddlings but as a Melee player, I can confidently say it was sadly community fucking up and not making proper plans in the end. The first time they tried to block EVO 2013 was retarded tho and thank God they walked it back.
Imo Melee works better as grassroots anyway.

But yeah otherwise it's people trying to make money with "fangames" that use assets from Nintendo games and same name in general, or tries to make money with Switch emulators/hacks, or pushes out emulators to play leaked games early(TotK for recent example).

My dad introduced me to a bunch of emulators in the early 2000s that had a huge collection of NES and SNES games on his computer when I was like 5-6 years old. I'd just start up games I knew nothing about on a daily basis.

I also found his fucking hentai collection of 80s-90s anime girls, neatly tucked a way in a labyrinth of folders with Japanese moonrune names. Some streaming shows have a weekly release schedule but cable, again for better or worse, used to be an event. It used to be a social cornerstone of media and stories. The “water cooler” meme in the office jobs centered around people congregating to discuss art. It’s like the modern day salon, but tied to wageslaving unfortunately.

Think about it this way: I recently was reading a book about high IQ individuals, and it made a point that builds on that “third spaces” trend going around. School is one of, if not (for some of us) the ONLY time where we’re forced to interact with the MOST people in our age-peer group. It’s the only time in our lives where everyone is funneled through the same system (involuntarily). Shows on cable bought people together and the hype in between only strengthened that. You get some of that with movies and streaming shows now, but it’s not the same because for one, studios know hype and speculation increase buzz and sales; so they leak stuff and drop more trailers than ever, and most streaming services dump a season at once. Personally I prefer to just binge watch stuff instead of artificially dripping it out, but there was a certain charm to it, especially with shows like Lost

Shit is still janky and broken in the single player like abilities bugging out till you die so you can't switch, multiplayer being added later is janky with the AI not treating coop players the same so you can convoy multiple vehicles of marines around the ring. The story is also huge catch up on what happened between 5 and infinite and then it name drops a new bad race we never see for a sequel. It's fucking half a game with the generic forest biome littered with forerunner and banished structures 99% of the time and then you go into generic alien ruins we've seen in past games already. There's nothing new beyond the open world aspect and it's so trivial you can bang out all the side content in a play session or two since the game itself is like 12 hours long.

Oh yeah, the campaign was entirely half baked. Even though the moment to moment shooting felt like the best thing 343 had put out yet, the actual design if the campaign was ass.
I did enjoy the MP for maybe a month but then my interest fizzled out (as it seemed to for many others), and I think Forge, Splitscreen play and a proper co op campaign would've made it last much longer.
