It's greatest effect is teaching you that there is no going back to conservatism/tradition, and that the only way you can get what you are looking for is moving through this era, it's technology, and it's social structures. It forces you to accept that deliberate change has to be made by inventing and controlling your own idea of progress, in spite of the obstacles at hand.
