If Basil "manipulated" Sunny then it goes both ways. Sunny was being shady af after the accident: he started dragging Mari's body upstairs (or maybe he actively asked Basil to help him, idk the dissociation thing is weird) and then he started mumbling weird shit to himself in panic (picrel.) So Basil picked up on this and helped Sunny. Sunny was grateful to Basil because he clearly didn't want to face the responsibility.

If we treat picrel as canon it actually explains why Basil got so mindfucked by the whole incident. Cause he clearly witnessed Sunny push Mari off the stairs and kill her, but then his precious Sunny started acting like he didn't do it and there's some deeper shit going on. So obviously a demon did it. It didn't occur to poor little Basil that Sunny is simply a bitch.

Oh, and if we don't treat the captions as canon, there's no way of telling whose idea it was.
