Works should be criticized based on what they’re trying to achieve and how well they execute it, not on what you personally want it to be. A lot of unprofessional critiques read more like angry fan letters venting about how they didn’t like how the direction of the story went, than thought provoking pieces meant to analyze why the creator chose to write their story that way, and why it did or didn’t work.

Omori’s open ending is a good example. There’s a good reason why Omocat chose to end the game that way, but some morons just complain that they weren’t given a happily ever after ending where everything is forgiven, when that was never the point in the first place.

You're missing the point, which is, these characters are trash, so they don't deserve a happy ever after. The story is trash too, cause it's based on a number of ridiculous contrivances, so it shouldn't even exist.

Realistic Sunny would have no devoted friends to begin with because he's a worthless person. Realistic OMORI is Sunny realizing that his friends never really liked him that much, they only cared about his perfect sister. Or he straight up imagined them and the sister. He is a canonical schizo after all.

No 12 year old would slave away for months to buy a fucking violin for their shitty rich friend, apropos of nothing. It was a Christmas gift to boot. None of these characters have lives or goals that don't center around the utterly unlikeable protagonist. They're souless marionettes.

A loser like Sunny would have no dedicated simp willing to cover up a crime for them.

The logistics of the coverup are hardly logical.

The ending is technically open, but it implies Sunny's friends would be assholes to not forgive him, which is all sorts of wrong.

The violin drama is forced and only makes sense if Sunny is a literal tard too autistic to voice any complaints. But it's not like the game comes out and says it or offers genuine commentary on mental health.

This story is just a huge pile of bullshit, and not even the feel good type. It's not pleasant. Not cathartic. It offers no truths about the world. Every aspect of it is worthless.

He's someone the friends can be open with because they trust him to listen to their problems. We're told this when it's described that Aubrey and Basil would vent to him about their problems, and shown this when Kel tells him about what happened to Hero after Mari died which is something he's never told anyone else. There's even some hints to imply Sunny knew about Aubrey's home situation, something she clearly kept her friends in the dark about. She could have told Mari or Hero or even their parents if she wanted help. But instead she told Sunny. Someone who would listen to her problems and not judge her for them or offer unwanted help. Because she just needed someone to share her problems with. That's something Sunny does for his friends. The Aubrey at the end of Memory Lane sharing more about herself shows what Aubrey's opened up to him about that he remembered.

The side quests are just optional content. They are literal filler about filler characters who don't even have names for the most part. They don't have anything to do with the final bonus scene.

Moreover they are out of character for Sunny. Sunny sure wasn't a helpful boy pre-incident, he's shown to be extremely lazy and ungrateful, and suicidally indolent (so lazy he almost drowned? Fucking really?) He sure wasn't helping people when he was rotting in his house for 4 years. If you want something sizeable, Sunny fishes out a wedding ring out of a sink drain for Sarah's Dad and helps him pick out a anniversary gift, as well as helps Sarah's Mom realize she's being a bit hard on him and nudges her to get a gift her husband loves. Sarah's Dad himself says Sunny saved his marriage in the message at the hospital, even if it's most likely an exaggeration. All of that without any of the friends help. There's also tutoring Brent and Joy, which Kel sleeps on the job during. Kel did the heavy lifting during Jesse's quest, but Sunny's the one who was persistent enough to have them barge into the kids room when he wouldn't answer.
And pre-incident, Sunny wasn't that bad. The Lost Library book describing construction of the treehouse, he's making notes of how long its been since Mari climbed down the ladder. If we take some of what happened in Vast Forest's Playground as being reflective of reality, than Sunny probably helped out Kim in finding a lost tetherball at some point. Maybe even other things to help out. Dialogue from Cris' Mom implies him and Kel have been over enough for her to remember him, so it's not like he was an anti-social kid outside his friends. And Cris also remembers him.

Sunny didn't earn most of them is what I'm saying. Mincy quest is just Kel rizzing Mincy up. Pipe guy's quest was completed when Aubrey fixed the leaky pipe. Sunny didn't help the guy at all. He was just standing around doing nothing, as per usual. Brent's and Joy' parents thank Sunny for doing his job, for which he got paid. Nothing else. Most others are for mind-bogglingly trivial shit like playing hide n seek with the twins, agreeing with the artist woman, or finding the MAGA guy's remote. Also Sunny took credit for the janitor's quest that was completed by Kel. Kel helped the janitor to reconnect with his son. Sunny just helped him to pick a shitty gift. I still fail to see Sunny's awesomeness.

Sunny also helps motivate Mincy when prompted. I'm not sure about this next part, but I'm pretty sure you even don't get the flower from Mincy if you say no at any point. Sunny didn't fix Gruff Guy's pipe, but he visited his house when the guy invited him over to watch him fix the pipe on day one, and also visited of his own volition the following two days. Daphne and Bowen are weird. Sunny plays yes-man to Artist' on the first day, but he also helps find Artist's missing dog Lucas the next day. Sunny finding the remote isn't that grand, but it's a small good deed he does for some people he seems to know. Sure the gift Sunny picked out for Jesse was a bust, but he also helped get Jesse out of his room. It wasn't Kel that burst down the door, it was Sunny who kept knocking until deciding to barge in. Also the dad doesn't know what Kel did, so he assumes it was Sunny.
Sunny's not some awesome dude. He's just a person who made a horrifically unforgivable mistake. Sunny's actions speak louder than words, notably his words as spoken by Omori. Sunny tells himself he's a murderer who doesn't care or think about anyone else. It's what he believed all these years, there's even room to interpret that Sunny thought he was a burden even before Mari's death. But his actions over the three days show otherwise. The flowers openly tell this, but even small deeds that don't have a flower associated with them do. Like letting Joy & Brent play outside after being couped up studying for so long, or feeding the orange cat. Sunny's a good kid.

Replaying Omori made me realize that I've been consuming the same media over and over again for the last three years. I really should open myself up to more experiences before my own head turns into Headspace. I've noticed that I've been very uncreative lately, which sucks as an artist and a guy who wants to do his own thing in general.

I'm taking a little stroll through certain games before deciding to consume new things.

I've been playing Earthbound.
I never played Castle Crashers beyond the first two levels, so I'm playing that too.
I've gone back to Hollow Knight, Omori, and Pokémon Clover to complete them 100%, although I am using the GBA emulator's fast forward because I'm not that unemployed.

When I'm done with that, I'll go back to my incomplete game of Persona 3 and play other RPGs, specifically ones that aren't so quirky.

That's almost an adult? Mari was younger when she died, but she's the embodiment of worth. Mari and Hero were perfect mini adults at 15 years old. Hero is still perfect at 19 years old, Mari would be too if she didn't die. Kel is outgoing, cheerful, kind, and good at sports. Aubrey is implied to be physically attractive, at the very least. She's stylish, athletic, and self-reliant. She was bubbly and energetic as a kid, and it's totally understandable why that's no longer the case. Basil is an artistic soul, he's good at photography and gardening. For better or for worse, he's absurdly loyal when he catches oneitis. He's probably also pretty cute in-universe.

Now what does Sunny have going for him? Even his simp thinks he's plain. He can't do basic things like taking care of himself and holding a conversation. He's emotionless and dull. He has no life skills or unique hobbies. He's weak like a newborn kitten, mentally too. He's a shut-in, possibly a NEET. He probably smells. He ruined his friends' and family's lives. He's a liar. He's lazy and ungrateful. He's a coward. He's a lolicon. He has a barely disguised mean streak. His personality fucking sucks. He's a canon schizo, and probably an autist. He attacked his crush, killed his sister, and possibly her cat. He destroyed multiple sentimental gifts. He destroys everything he touches. Honestly, I could say that you lack media literacy or something like that, but I'm going to be fair and acknowledge that the game doesn't do a perfect job of portraying Sunny's personality.

I mean, it's something that's present in small details and flavor text that are easy to miss. It's understandable that someone would get a negative impression of Sunny, since the only thing that's made explicitly clear is that he's deeply traumatized and feels immensely guilty about what happened, and that he has an unhealthy nostalgia for his past.

I would have liked there to be more sections (or dialogue options) where he explicitly shows how he feels or what he thinks about his friends and their lives, or his situation in general. This is why I'm not a fan of Headspace. These parts of the game do nothing more than reaffirm things we already know or add information that isn't that relevant, such as “I think this character is an annoying bitch.” In that sense, I would have liked Headspace to be much more like Magicant.

There's a bunch of other "somethings" in the game, e.g. "something in the water" (which was based on seaweeds, I think) so they are not that unique. Maybe we never get to see what Basil sees. In any case it makes 0 sense for hanged Mari to push Mari off the stairs. So "something behind you killed Mari" makes no sense if Sunny and Basil see the same thing, unless he's saying Mari killed herself or there's an actual demon following Sunny around.
