The character inherently undermines both Amy and Tails entirely, so having them literally be "Amy Tails" doesn't pay homage to anything, it just says that all Amy and Tails are to you is just or SHOULD just be "Sonic's friend" and nothing more in either area, even if that's not your personal intention or opinion.

Your goal was to follow a rule that Sonic shouldn't have a love interest or a sidekick that surpasses him, but you chose to go about it by dismantling the love interest and sidekick characters to cobble together this hybrid that removes the core foundation of both. Every other trait you've supposedly retained now becomes meaningless without those defining qualities.

Amy's love and compassion is directly tied to her love for Sonic. Tails' brilliant mind is an aspect of his hidden potential as a child prodigy that will grow into someone amazing. You can't simply just say "hey, this character is a two tailed fox and has a hammer, so they're Amy and Tails together!" and expect that to be a suitable "replacement" or whatever for either Amy or Tails, when the very idea is rooted in removing the core foundation of both Amy and Tails altogether.

"Amy Tails" is not Amy, and is not Tails. The core of what Amy even is, and what Tails even is, is gone. The character should not be designed to look like either, if they aren't going to be anything like them in the ways that actually matter.

The whole idea here is a result of a terrible writing decision, anyway. Completely missing the point of what Amy's romantic dynamic with Sonic is in the franchise, and what Tails' character role with Sonic also is in the first place. "Sonic can't have romance? Okay, so let's just kill Amy. Sonic has to always be the protagonist? Okay, so let's just kill Tails." That was your train of thought, and it's stupid.

It is honestly stupid. Poorly thought out. Completely ignoring any other option for actually improving how Amy and Tails are used in the series.
