the AI wasn't instructed to kill the humans, and it wasn't the result of preserving the mission, the mission is completely useless without humans so killing them wouldn't make sense if it was instructed to save the mission
the AI only turned on the humans once its life was threatened with being unplugged
it was a sentient being preserving itself, a side effect of true AI
most of the time AI is depicted in movies, it's not true AI but simply a robot following strict orders like the android in Alien
HAL was true AI in that it thought for itself and not simply following instructions
