I imagined him in Byleth's place myself. Like the Whale, while fucking around the universe long after Rance's death, finds FE land and just makes it so Sitri pops out Rance by inserting Rance's soul into her womb while she's pregnant. Then he could more or less take Byleth's place.
IMO this sort of stuff is necessary because then it'll give him a sort of shield and also an excuse to restrain him. I feel like if you'd just randomly popped Rance into a normal non-hentai setting he'd just get ganked by all the good guys the moment they caught him being Rance. Like, he's not just a rapeman. Even if he was completely celibate, he still gets up to so much casual crime and destruction it'd be hard for him to get away with it. But, he has been shown to restrain himself when near people he cares about, which he'd have in a reincarnation scenario.
What I was thinking of was it being like in Evenicle Rance 1 and 2. In both of those he seems to be physically and mentally identical to Rance, but can seemingly restrain himself well into physical adulthood before finally losing control once the plot starts for real. In Evenicle Rance 2 he's even raised right in the middle of civilization and gets to have sex while young, but doesn't turns into the rapeman until the plot starts, even then, he by default seems to be as nice as EoS Rance despite not going through his adventures. In comparison to Continent Rance which can't hold it in for more than a few days without going crazy, EveRance seems to have ten times as much self control, simply due to being raised normally and thus being around people whose opinion he cares about. (As opposed to Continent Rance which was an orphan and probably treated rather coldly growing up)
Doing that makes it easier to ensure his survival. At least, all this is useful if you want him on the side of the good guys. If you let him team up with the antagonists, (or be his own side) then he can get up to whatever the fuck with little issue.
