The older games expect you to power through which is why they have large rosters. The newer games have been leaning more towards min/maxing and going full autism building each unit so they don't really feel like they have permadeath much in mind anymore. Old FE and nu FE are like two different series.
>On higher difficulties a random enemy crit can straight up put you in an unwinnable situation
One skill in FE is learning how to calculate risks like that and mitigate them. People will avoid taking engagements with enemies that have crit rates higher than 3% on ironman runs.

NTA but he's right, those are your choices because you're not going to get tightly designed games that have elements of old FE from IS or KT or whoever makes mainline FE anymore. A good example is how the roster sizes keep shrinking because every game needs full voice acting now and it'd be expensive to fully voice a cast of Binding Blade's size. So if you liked FE having large casts, you have no choice but to go to smaller games that don't require a huge budget to go into each and every character.
