Japanese is such a bullshit language to translate, and I don't envy anyone that has to do it. On text, Japanese speech is very basic, restrained, and repetitive. It's hard to say either rote translation or artistic liberty is preferable 100% of the time. When it comes to Tactics, WotL was released in junction with FFXII, which itself has a brilliant, Shakespearean translation. So the new translation was designed to coincide with it, and I think it works very well.
You guys can fret back and forth over every little line, but the overall package is superior, imo.
I'd like to posit a more flippant example.
FFX Yuna's final words to Tidus:
Japanese:ありがとう.
English: I love you.
Some Japanophile might try to argue the subtle "thank you" carries more meaning and weight, but fuck, man, if I'm in the middle of dying for you, I think most people would prefer an "I love you." Even in Japan.
