For fanworks, I simply want it to be "accurate enough" in that it doesn't repeatedly break my immersion by contradicting what I know. You'd have more wiggle room by placing it in an AU or a spinoff canon.
It's also easy to point out that your group acts pretty psychotic as well, sometimes without a clear trigger. I can pull up plenty of really unhinged examples where it's clear that the poster wants real life harm to come to people.
