>My hometown was a complete shithole but I always liked it. It really did feel like home. Since I moved to the West however, no matter how pretty the buildings or the environment may be, the atmosphere is extremely stifling, suffocating and depressing.
Well your hometown will always be your hometown. I was watching a video of a British woman born in Japan to missionaries (whose grandparents were also missionaries) and she spoke Japanese as her first language, grew up in Japan, and found Britain alienating when traveling there. It was pretty interesting. Japanese would still see her as a foreigner because she's not ethnic Japanese but they'd also be shocked because she essentially is Japanese down to the mannerisms.
