Putin was trying to take back land that his people owned within his own lifetime. It's wrong, he shouldn't have done it, and nobody should ever have taken up arms for his ego, but if we're going to question why NATO was seen as a problem, you should see their "response" to what Israel has been doing and it gives you an idea.
