Well the problem is ratios. I quick search on YouTube says the story of Engage lasts ~7 and a half hours. 7 hours of the most annoying dialogue possible, constructed by a team of writers and voiced by a team of actors. And based on interviews, they really wanted got to care about it. And those character designs are still gonna be themselves regardless of if you skip every bit of story context there is. You can try and reduce the reduce the entire game to Pong if you want but no very few are going to want to tolerate an annoying cast for 7 hours. More to the point, if you encountered a game with the best gameplay you you've ever seen but one of the protag was a tranny, would you be willing to tolerate it?

Yes the designs in engage are shit, utterly completely dogshit theres only like 2 characters whos design I like. I've played a lot of SRPGs and the general rule that has still yet to be broken is that every SRPG has a better narrative than any FE but none have gameplay as tightly designed and fun as FE and are all full of reused maps that have no real layouts beyond height differences and fights just turn into slugfests of all the units being clumped together just walking behind each other to get back attacks. The only exceptions to this are Valkyria Chronicles and X-COM, these two series also put a lot of effort into their map design. Unfortunately VC has other major problems like scout rushing being so dominant and X-COM does occasionally reuse maps so they're not perfect.

My low stakes conspiracy is that like how they ran CYL early in 2023 because they figured if they ran it at the usual time when FE Engage came out it would be just like 3H's release and just be the 3H show, they're fucking with any FE information vis-a-vis the next CYL event specifically because of Engage.
Now they have the opposite problem of 3H's sheer dominance, so they're deliberately delaying the announcement of any FE4/FE5 material(e.g. the conspicuous absence of FE4 or FE5 characters while every other FE MC is in the Switch 2 avatars).
So after two consecutive Engage shutouts they're going to try to stay quiet, run CYL 10, one last chance to get any Engage character over the low as fuck threshold, and then finally announce something about FE4/5, even if it has an uncharacteristically aggressive release date.

And I was half expecting Koei and IntSys to alternate FE releases with their own takes on the franchise, but when Hopes didn’t have DLC (a shocking first for a Musou) and the now the focus on Age of Imprisonment, I don’t know if Koei is doing anything FE anymore.
The only possibility I see them is having done a Switch 2 upgrade for 3H, but that seems unlikely since third parties didn’t get dev kits until this year.

I personally hate the ring mechanic that feel like your actual units while the units themselves are just stat bags to stick them onto. I also hate the super attacks. I get they wanted the rings because it essentially means you can’t lose a unit with a truly unique ability unless you run out of “lives” to put them on but at that point just get rid of permadeath as it really doesn’t even add that much to the series and does more to hurt the development of secondary characters since the game can’t assume any of them are alive at any given moment in the story.

What 3H should’ve done for post timeskip was make it an actual back to back campaign. So the choices for class development in Part 1 mattered more (maybe special items for an emergency class change instead of having to train).
Hopes base camp was much better and didn’t overdo it for each chapter (plus it cleaned up redundant activities).

That era for gaming was sad overall. It’s right before the explosion in digital sales and larger install bases, but development costs were increasing and there was an over saturation of games available. So niche fanbases weren’t enough to turn a good profit, let alone take the costs of localization.
What came to mind is how Ace Attorney Investigations 2 was skipped like FE12 for localization. FE having its explosion with Awakening was really good timing for it and Fates and 3H carried that momentum. Especially with the timing of the Switch launch taking off. Now, Nintendo is smarter than other devs with maintaining proper budgets and knowing how to time its releases to maximize sales, instead of having things cannibalizing each other.
Just kinda feel like FE could’ve had more in the past 7 years aside from 3H and Engage.

What I don’t like about Engage’s story/setting is how the world didn’t feel natural at all. With the world design being a ring of land, it felt off how it tried to play it serious like it was actually a normal world with a history of nations or whatever (with no changes after a thousand years?). I kept on thinking it was some kind of special realm like Heroes or whatever, but the truth is the setting just exists as a backdrop for the written plot.

Honest answer? Engage was preceded by 3H which had several year's worth of political tribalism and LORE. So when Engage released and not only was there no lore but the bad guy was a literal HA HA I'M EVIL, it left a bad taste in a lot of people's mouths.

Now to be fair, I don't outright hate Engage's narrative. I used to. But it does some pretty neat things. However the story is somehow both very blunt and explains very little. There's several moments where something will just happen with no explanation or affect on the plot outside of that moment. For examples, and spoilers: Alear dies 3 times in this one game. Which is pretty hilarious in itself. But after his 2nd death, kek, Alear ends up in some weird afterlife. Okay fine, but then your sister somehow follows you there. Bear in mind, your sister isn't dead. Okay maybe she can just do that because her unique power is to raise the dead. Except that she didn't even have that idea before a very dead Alear brought it up. I do love fantasy stories, especially video game fantasy stories. I don't need the writing to be screened through 5 lore masters to enjoy it. But I feel like a plot beat surviving just 2 layers of scrutiny isn't unreasonable. And if it were just the one thing then it would be fine but this type of thing happens all over the game. You genuinely have to do your best to not think about what's happening to enjoy it. Which is really frustrating because there are parts of Engage and are genuinely interesting and the game gives it no attention

Okay here's another silly one: after Chapter 17, best chapter in the game, better than 10, fuck you if you disagree. Veyle becomes aware of her split personality and now that she knows it's there, she refuses to allow herself to sleep, even under torture, because doesn't want to do more bad things. A very frustrated Zephia reports this to Sombron and Sombron pulls a crown out of his ass that will enhance her draconic impulses to force Eveyle to the surface, effectively burying Veyle forever. So in the moment you kind of get worried for Veyle but in the next moment my thought was: why the fuck was this not plan A? How long has he had this crown? Why the hell would he not put that on Veyle immediately? At least after Chapter 10. Why the hell did Alear not get this crown 1000 years ago? You trusted him enough to give him the Marth Ring. Again 2 layers of scrutiny, I don't hate the idea of the crown itself but you have to be ready to answer the most obvious questions when you introduce a fantastical element. And Engage just never does that. And okay yes, older FEs would do this but I think it's more glaring in Engage because Engage has actual scenes where you can see these things play out.
