there’s so much wrong with this it’s crazy.
first, the "$59m" ff16 budget is just some random number that got passed around reddit. keywords studios, who worked on the game, put ff16 at $300m+ in their investor deck.
second, the "$150m revenue = $100m profit" math is straight-up wrong. square doesn’t get the full sale price. blatantly ignoring sony’s platform cut (usually around 30% of the sale price), retail fees, marketing, and other costs. actual take-home is way less, more like half at best.
third, linking dev costs to a jump in "other" liabilities shows you don’t get accounting. dev costs aren’t liabilities. they’re assets amortized as expenses on the income statement, not liabilities. even if fully amortized in q1 fy2024, it wouldn’t show as liabilities in q2.
last, you’re acting like ff16 is the only thing making money for square enix. it’s not. ff16 sells less than their other games and business.
if ff16 was really selling well, they’d be bragging about it everywhere, not hiding the numbers in some random line. trying to say all that cash comes from ff16 is just dumb.
