I always forget Gohan is in that page... I got nothing to excuse that, but I doubt it's indicative of Gohan's power, specially with how strong Piccolo turned out to be, since not only was he capable of defeating Gero, Krillin specifically comments he's ridiculously powerful while not even being a super saiyan. Gohan has no statement/feat that puts him in a similar ballpark.

He seemed to be desperate and making rash decisions in that situation at least. Against Yakon he figured it wasn't making Yakon any stronger (Yakon only talks about it being a meal and doesn't boast about a power increase). Against Super 17 he was being retarded.
