I think it's in part because Scott just really didn't seem to think too much about it, while Knives was the type who was in a rush to check off the markers of adulthood as she becomes more acquainted with the way that things are outside of her sheltered bubble. It was at least like that in the original pitch for the series. It's probably not as common now, though I'm sure it still happens. Good thing for Knives is that Scott didn't have really ill intentions, though maybe Neil or Kim ended up taking her virginity.
