Have you considered the fact that it's a video game and characters don't have the same durability as real life humans? Or the fact that a lot of enemies in games that use swords are either armored or fantastical creatures with tough hides? This means that you need a thicker, heavier weapon that's durable and can be used as a shitty bludgeon in case it can't cut through something. Combine that with stronger humans and bigger weapons make more sense.

That's also fine if you want to go in that direction. For example MGR'S high frequency blades can cut through molecular bonds.
People are free to choose whatever they think is cooler because video games aren't actually real life.
