I miss old 40k
The stakes were lower. Particular narratives tended to focus on one campaign or one planet instead of £50 plastic characters doing Galaxy Quest WWF.
Most things on the table were kind of average and you spent a lot of time rolling for 3+ or 4+, instead of rolling 20 dice and getting re-rolls with the [Keyword] because your army got a buff in the quarterly Dataslate update as they were lagging behind with a 48.34% tournament win rate.
That's before we even mention the MOBA-like way nu40k tables are played by even casual players, with L-shaped MDF terrain and rubber dinner plate objective markers.
Not to mention how freeing and creative you could be with armies like Orks and Chaos. Now when I see kitbashes it seems entirely the reserve of "hobby influencers" and GW acolytes getting two £40 squad boxes, it's hardly like the Bitz catalogue of yore is it.
