I think it's because the U.S is so fucked that he's basically all we have left, and so there's a huge chunk of the population that sees him as a savior given we all know we have no other chance. Until he does something really awful like annihilate the economy or get us involved directly in a big war and young Americans start dying people will still participate in the cargo/personality cult of his because it's all we have left.
He's a screwball populist character propped up by the establishment of a failing system and reluctantly supported by normalfags for stability's sake. I'd say good historical comps to him would be Giolitti in pre-Fascist Italy or Stolypin in the late Russian Empire, and much like those figures what comes after will be far worse.
