While the idea of a simulation in the technical sense is novel, I think quite a few cultures came to similar conclusions albeit without the ability to point to a parallel in their everyday life as we can.
Hindu philosophy sees this world as a dream that was created by the God(s) essentially out of boredom.
Even the Abrahamic religions view our current reality as only a precursor to something greater.

I think that modern atheism might be fairly unique in seeing this life as WYSIWYG and this being all there is. Funnily enough I think they come to that conclusion because they are so disconnected to real life.
