Slavery in a story is fine. Its apart of history and to deny it so kills any accuracy that the author was trying to go for. The MC owning slaves is what draws a lot more ire. As its viewed by modern society as reprehensible and highly up for debate. Shield hero is a great example of how to handle your main character needing slaves. Where he was at in his story and how much of a corner society backed him into, he HAD to adopt slaves in order for him to progress. No one would party with him and given what you learn about his class in that world and how an entire religion is founded upon hating the shield hero, it makes perfect sense why he needs slaves. But the viewer will still hate him for it no matter the justification so they automatically hate the story and think it bad, crass, and edgy without actually finding out more about it first before making up their mind. Their loss.
