If munchkins were a problem for you (as characters) then I will re-iterate: skill issue on your end. If they have been shit at roleplay/assholes then sure, their fault, but linking an optimized character to being an autist is just insane to me.
As for my games, I like people playing competent characters, because
a) it tells me that they actually engaged with the system and decided what they want from it
b) I don't need to hand-hold them and am free to toss elders into the ring w/o my players feeling like I'm bullying them
c) it tells me they got a "hacker mindset" and will likely come up with creative problem solving when their dice stop working
With c your mileage may vary. Sure, there are those autists that try to solve everything with a large combat dice pool, but in my experience those players are often very young or make themselves known with their character's backstory, and the dice pools are just a symptom.
