>a banana taped to the wall isn't art.
I think it is, and give me a chance to explain why.
I'm not an artist or an academic, but I have a lot of friends who are artists and I spend a lot of time consuming all kinds of art and thinking about art. To me, art is any expression (I used to think deliberate, now I'm not sure) of your inner world: Your thoughts, feelings, opinions - taken from inside of you and communicated to the outside world.
The example you gave of a banana or any contemporary art tends to get people thinking "what the fuck is this dogshit? It takes no skill. It's not art" but you're looking at art's value as an expression of technical skill, and as a final product. The process of making art itself can be (and often is - look up process art) part of the art. The message the artist is trying to convey is part of the art. The place where it's placed, the time context - all of these elements are relevant to understanding art. There's definitely beautiful art that's designed to just be aesthetically appealing, that looks realistic and is an expression of technical skill, but not all art is designed for that specific purpose.
If you want, we can talk about this particular painting and I can try to defend it, but you're welcome to attack it and tell me why you think it sucks as well. I'm not very articulate, but I think it's totally reasonable for you to think it's awful. I'd just enjoy talking about it
