It's not really rule of cool, anon. Digimon evolve through meme environment dna. Literally. Every digimon is a program (agu.mon) and they feed off digital data. Meaning, that whatever your digimon evolves into is whatever it's fed. They're like a PNG on your desktop you keep feeding bits of data to see what it turns into. A digimon in the same environment absorbing the same balanced data that created them is going to follow linear progression, but will mutate into something else if it gets an inbalanced oversaturation of something else.

For example, if agu.mon was zipped into your shortstack fantasy folder he'd eventually digivolve into a fat titty shortstack dragon, but if it's your general wet bench with some shortstack he might just skip fat titty shortstack dragon and go straight into waifu.mon.
