They tried to turn Final Fantasy into Devil May Cry, but forgot that Devil May Cry fans don't want to sit through 20-30 hours of cutscenes and Final Fantasy fans don't want to play a Devil May Cry game.
In short, it's the identity of the game, it doesn't know what it wants to be. It has longer cutscenes than even Kojima games, but the combat is action focused with almost no rpg elements, and the elements that are there are basic state +1% types and they aren't cosmetic, meaning you don't see any accessory like a belt or ring on the main character.
Speaking of the main character, he's the only one who is playable, there is no Party system, none whatsoever in a 'Final Fantasy' game.
Even the Spin Off titles Strangers of Paradise had a party system, also a far, far deeper customisation system for weapons and loot.
Speaking of loot there is none in FF16 other than 10wolveskins and 10gil hope you like 10 gil because that's what you'll be getting from most of the chests.
I really, really wanted to like this game, I was excited to play it I even bought a PS5 just for FF16, and I felt immense disappointment with the game.
I did enjoy the story and felt emotions during certain moments, two of the characters reuniting for example was very touching as was the ending, but the gameplay, the world itself, the lack of exploration, of loot, of items in the world, of variety in the enemies, and lack of towns and cities to explore, places to go.
FF15 gets a lot of slack but it had fully modelled towns, gas stations, little locations to explore and a couple of cities. FF16 had none of that, very, very disappointing.
Voice cast was amazing and probably the highlight, unfortunately the best character in the game dies too soon.
