His language is preverbal or semi-verbal, suggesting an infantile subject not yet fully acculturated into the adult Symbolic order (more on this with Lacan below).

This regression appeals because it promises a release from the burdens of adult subjectivity: responsibility, coherence, social performance. To identify with Apu is to long for a prelapsarian innocence, to cradle the ego in a blanket of helplessness. In this helplessness there is also power: the power to elicit care, attention, or indulgence from others, without the burden of agency.
