The lead-up to 3's final boss really stuck out to me because of how Mario acts in it. Luigi is still his usual self, creeping around all precarious ledges and decaying architecture, but then you have Mario literally wall jumping up the building. Then Mario finds Peach's portrait on the roof and starts helplessly despairing, while Luigi doesn't even blink since it's an easily solved problem that he's been dealing with for two games now. It's like Mario and Luigi are experiencing the game through entirely different genres. We played the game as a spooky adventure, and despite the world around the Bros reflecting that, Mario is an inexplicable platformer character that completely (if not literally given that he keeps scaring the shit out of Luigi throughout the sequence) ignores every environmental hazard around him. And yet, three games of getting captured indicates Mario ultimately lacks any form of meaningful counter to King Boo and his magic; while Mario's platforming gameplay might trivialize navigation, it's Luigi who is best suited to the spooky adventure the game really is, and thus the status of main character can't truly be taken with him, even if this alternate gameplay style was a playable segment.
It's just an idea I think is neat. It makes me think, if Mario treats Luigi's Mansion like a platformer, would other characters act differently too?
Sorry for the wall of autism.
