Yeah that's true. MtG's lack of movies or games means it has comparatively little ways to be a secondary; it's not like 40k where most fans have never touched a mini.
So most fans are invested into playing the actual game one way or another, so even if they're Commander-only, they end up channeling their creativity into making card-related stuff.
Also, famous internet artists get directly asked to make card art for MtG sometimes, don't they? So they end up making actual ingame art as opposed to fanart.
And I do see MtG fanart here and there, it's just that most fanartists gather on Tumblr as opposed to Twitter or Reddit for some reason.
