Is there a single format where competent decks are built around a solid gameplan of the most efficient versions of generic spells, instead of being built on a few unique cards with busted interactions? Pretty much the only thing close to it is pauper and it still feels like every deck is a borderline combo deck. I haven't seen something like, just running a bunch of undercosted red/white vanilla creatures, in years.

Greed happened.
In an effort to suck more profits out of people, everything good about the game was sacrificed. Everything was turned into a FOMO trap. Focus testing consumed and obliterated all artistry. Production cycles got crushed to their absolute minimum, resulting in recycled designs where every set is just the same 10 god forsaken fucking archetypes over and over again, because they don't have time to produce anything but the absolute most cookie cutter low-effort slop possible.

The list goes on.
MTG not a game anymore. It is a vehicle for Hasbro profits.

Goblin Guide is literally a staple in even Legacy burn and is just a vanilla 2/2 with haste, it's only non evergreen keyword ability is a downside that benefits the opponent which is how "cheap" creature bodies with good stats have been made since fucking Alpha
Burn is the most honest and straightforward archetype in Magic history. You're just trying to do an average of three damage per card so you can kill the enemy in seven cards.

This deck is ~$100 and beats multi thousand costing legacy combo decks at tournaments

I've been playing a variation of these rules for kitchen table with my wife, and it's the best time I've had with the game in years. I want to adapt it for a larger coverage of sets and years, but balance is hard to come by with any massive card pool.

How would you adapt this ruleset to a more modern-esque card pool? Would leaving it with the same card pool and B&R list as modern work? Would a pioneer-like card pool work?

What about a "mini standard" where card pool consists of only the most recent years worth if sets, and the oldest set rotates out on it's yearly anniversary?

These aren't exclusively new cards, these aren't exclusively old cards, these aren't one offs. You've apparently hallucinated a version of the color pie that says green can't do this, when it's been doing that shit the whole time. Why are you trying to conflate existing cards throughout the history of the game with "over the next 5 years" as if this is some new development? If breaks happen elsewhere, then that'd be bad, sure. >Why are you trying to conflate existing cards throughout the history of the game with "over the next 5 years" as if this is some new development?

For low power, I would just make five 40 card mono color decks and split them almost down the middle, taking a random 14 non-land cards from each. Add 10 dual color uncommons or rares that point to specific archetypes you want to enable, 4 artifacts, 6 random dual lands for a total of 90 cards. Combo decks kinda struggle to be created but some good synergies can be built into it. I like the small size for focus on individual card quality, but you can also follow similar principles for 180, 360, etc cubes.

unironically no.
they pick a legendary (usually from a top 10 or top 100 list), then throw in the same ~20 mana rocks and ramp and goodstuff artifacts they run in every single list, then they throw in a bunch of lands they don't understand the purpose of but were told are good or read a list of, then they scroll through the 20 most popular cards on EDHrec for their commander and add everything in even if they're used for conflicting archetypes, and then finally they will start adding in cards to finish the count.

The best format for having an understanding of the color pie and a card's role in a deck and thinking about what kind of mana curve/play patterns you want with a deck is Limited/Draft, the absolute worst is EDH. Since most new players are going straight to EDH despite it being a 4-player format originally played by Judges who already knew the game inside and out, new player competence and skills at fundamental Magic has never been lower

Is it? Looking at this one, drawing a card as an ability with no frills usually costs 4, and waterbend being convoke + improvise adding 2 on top of that makes sense given those usually added 1 or 2 to their costs as well.

I guess one problem is there's not a good permanent type for tokens besides artifact but I still hate it. Food tokens should be Green or be a counter you put on lands or some shit, Blood tokens should be Black or be a counter that goes in creatures.

With all the dumb emblems and side cards needed to play the game like monarch/dungeon/initiative/attractions/stickers/whatever surely there's a way to make it so "your vampire has a pile of blood" and "your hobbit has a bunch of pie" isn't letting Mirrodin affinity decks cast everything for free. Clue tokens being artifacts was the only one I didn't really mind since it's literally finding actual physical items like a murder weapon or whatever, professor plum killed Mr. Boddy in the dining room with a candlestick etc

Enchantment wouldn't be the worst option. It isn't as if there aren't enchantments representing weirder things than food or blood.
Even if it didn't make the most sense, it'd still be better for the game to not have literally every random token they come up with be an artifact just for the sake of avoiding more synergy.

>arguing about the lore accuracy of UB cards
Kill yourselves

I played 82 card 4c DnT at Legacy today. We had the largest turnout we've had in the past several years with 20 players; it could've been even even a little higher but a couple of regulars didn't attend.

2-1 UB Tempo
1-2 Mystic Forge
0-2 Hive Mind
2-0 RUG Delver
2-1 Birds Tribal
2-0 BRW Energy

6th place overall, but prizing is only top 4 unfortunately. The forge player ended up 2nd and the Hivemind player ended up 1st somehow. Against forge I had a perfect opening hand in game 1 with Ouphe, Phantom and flicker effects OTP, mulled to 4 in game 2 and died quickly, then game 3 lost to him Karning for a Liquimetal Coating and turning off my forest, my only green source in play/hand, then I fetched Shadowy Backstreet and saw an Ouphe on top with no way to cast it. He untapped on 1 life from Ring and put a Paradox Engine into play. Hive Mind crushed me; I Pyroblasted a Brainstorm after Thoughtseizing him and seeing he had nothing going on - Ponder, 2 Pact of the Titan and some lands taking ponder - then he drew into Stock Up and Hive Mind and I had no way to address either.

The extra colours functioned surprisingly well and I only had trouble with the manabase once, apart from the surveil described above. Even Grist was relevant, and the deck overall recieved alot of bemused comments. For context, Forge and Cloudpost are quite popular at my LGS, and I am quite wary of Nadu which is somewhat popular and would like a way to fight it on the stack.

Black evil is self-interested or sadistic evil. A murderer for hire, a serial killer, a corrupt ruler, a bandit and highwayman.
Red evil is impulsive and passionate. The kind of person who does what he feels like and takes as he pleases. He does not consider the consequences, while Black believes the price to be worth paying. The rage-consumed berserker who massacres his enemies. The jilted lover who plans a murder-suicide.
White evil is the evil of order and ideals. The tyrant who is convinced it is for his subjects' own good or who the idea of the nation as something to be held above its people. The man who sees the world one way and destroys anything that would impede his vision with extreme prejudice.

Yeah that's true. MtG's lack of movies or games means it has comparatively little ways to be a secondary; it's not like 40k where most fans have never touched a mini.
So most fans are invested into playing the actual game one way or another, so even if they're Commander-only, they end up channeling their creativity into making card-related stuff.
Also, famous internet artists get directly asked to make card art for MtG sometimes, don't they? So they end up making actual ingame art as opposed to fanart.
And I do see MtG fanart here and there, it's just that most fanartists gather on Tumblr as opposed to Twitter or Reddit for some reason.

There's just not enough people who want that. Magic's lore has never been a selling point for the vast majority of people. One of the reasons Ravnica was so popular was because it gave color combos a faction identity, so people could feel like a part of X group and argue with Y group about things. But due to the multiverse setting you're never going to spend that much time with any particular character or even group, hence why they tried planeswalkers. Then they fucked that up too with shitty writing by trying to copy MCU with none of the charm.

False. Innistrad was normal Gothic Horror set with some homage to pop culture on a few cards. This is different than hat sets.

Pioneer and Modern can still be saved if they try.
Standard might be good sporadically but in the long-term it's always going to be a shitheap of a format. They'll never be able to keep the power level of standard under control as long as they keep including super pushed cards in the main set in order to keep EDH players interested. And let's be honest here, the amount of people who care about standard is a very small minority compared to EDH players these days, so they're not going to sacrifice baiting those people with pushed cards for the sake of what is now, by all objective metrics, a secondary format.

It’s weird, I used to play cube to save money on drafts. Now I play it to avoid the shit heap of playing limited with mythics and rares that are clearly not for limited. I liked Final Fantasy though. At least it was somewhat fantasy like. And they brought back guns despite that FAGGOT Maro saying they never would after Portal 2nd Age. I might make a set cube for it without all the busted and overpriced mythics like Vivi, Buster Sword etc. or just bizarre EDH bait like Moogle Merchant.

Draft has managed to remain decent, sure every once in a while someone opens something absolutely busted from the bonus sheet but it hasn't become as swingy as I feared it would become. What absolutely sucks though is opening absolutely unplayable rares and mythics designed for commander. But overall we've still had some good draft sets.

Rarity!=powerlevel noob-kun.
Rare-restrictions but no uncommon restrictions also leads to an incredibly long ban list because combo hosers are rare (for draft purposes) but combo enablers are common or uncommon (once more, draft).
You also can make incredibly stupid tempo piles with only uncommons and like, 2 rares.
See noble and peasant for how heavily the metagame warps compared to pauper as soon as you add uncommons.

On MTGA it just picks 15 random cards. It is like drafting a card pack one pick one in a new cube draft. People don't usually play in pods so it's not being tracked like that

>Thoughts on formats with limits on the maximum number of rare/mrares in a deck?
not exactly the same, but sorcery contested realm is a tcg where the amount of a card you can have in a deck is limited by rarity.

You could probably do something like that in mtg, for non-singleton formats.
Mythic rares are limited to 1x
rares are limited to 2x
uncommons limited to 3x
commons limited to 4x.
