That being said, this image has always bugged me since Gamiliel never actually converted to Christianity, merely said “if they’re really blessed by God, we can’t stop them”. “The Way” really was a Jewish Messianic sect at the time, much of the later gentile “flavor” came decades later due to the ministry of Paul (which was actually Saul’s duel Roman name, probably used to help with his preaching to majority gentile “godfearers” who worshiped Yahweh as either an incarnation of Zeus/Jupiter or the one god higher than Jupiter).

I would attribute that to illiteracy in general and biblical illiteracy in particular. The majority of Matthew 1 details how Jesus is the most Jewish of Jews, being from the tribe of Judah and the house of David. Luke 3 says the same thing. The real question is, was Christianity actually a coordinated effort by Jews to weaken and subjugate gentiles, or a movement that caught on with gentiles that just so happened to be started by Jews who were by and large deeply antagonistic towards the mainstream rabbinic tradition?
