Keep the better parts of yourself buried. War strips men like bark from wood; your only armor now is what you do not show.
And always, always observe. Count their supplies. Watch the officers-who eats first, who sleeps where. Listen to their movements, learn their habits. A front line shifts like a tide. One day you'll find yourself near enough to your own again-or near to those who would trade your freedom for something they need more. When that day comes, you don't run in a straight line. You move at dusk, in shadows. You leave nothing behind, and you carry no rage-only instinct.
And if the war outlasts you, then let your final thoughts be of water, of warm bread, of wind through leaves far from the sound of artillery. Not all deaths are defeats. But survival-ah, survival is a long and patient rebellion.
