The general condemnation of nu-metal really wasn't being lower class. The fags who love it want that to be the case to feel like underdogs but the reality is it was mostly just being shat on as music for immature middle-schoolers.
Most people who were into it, whether it be working class or suburban upperclass grew out of it at some point and moved onto stuff that wasn't just trying to be a 12 year old's spergout in rock form.
I don't really know the history of britpop by comparison so I can't say anything. Most poor brits I know all just like metal. (Hell they're probably more likely to be into nu-metal than they are into Ogaysis)
